The University of Essex has confirmed that it will close its Southend campus in summer 2026. This decision has been made because the number of international students at the campus has dropped sharply in recent years.

The university said that international enrolments at Southend have fallen by more than 50% since 2021. As a result, it has become difficult to manage costs and continue running the campus.

At present, around 800 students are studying at the Southend campus. These students will be given the option to move to the Colchester campus from September 2026 so they can continue their studies without interruption.

After reviewing different options, the university decided that focusing on fewer campuses is the best way to handle financial challenges. Many UK universities are facing similar problems due to lower international student numbers and rising expenses.

Staff Changes and Campus Focus

As part of this plan, the University of Essex will reduce staff numbers in stages. Around 200 teaching roles may be cut this academic year, with another 200 professional and support roles reduced over the next two years.

In the future, the university will mainly operate from its Colchester and Loughton campuses, where student numbers are higher. This move is expected to help the university continue offering quality education while controlling costs.

According to official data, the University of Essex had 5,905 international students in 2021/22, but enrolments later declined, especially at the Southend campus.

The university has also made it clear that it is not leaving international education. It will continue to welcome international students and work with global partners.

Why This Matters for International Students

Many UK universities now depend heavily on international tuition fees. Recently, the UK government proposed a £925 charge per international student, starting from 2028 in England.

While universities will get some exemptions, experts believe this policy could reduce university income overall. Combined with fewer international applications, more universities may reduce courses or close smaller campuses in the future.
